In May 2012, I was 410 lbs and just starting a clinical residency as a chaplain at a hospital. I first heard of DDPYoga through Arthur’s viral video, but I didn’t have the “time” or “money” to commit (i.e., I was afraid to fail, like every diet and workout program before).

Three and half years later, I was 460 lbs, and had found a specialty in hospice and palliative care, working with the sick and dying, and often seeing firsthand the effects that human choices have on how we age. I was also starting to have my own pain as old weightlifting and football injuries were beginning to flare up in my 36 year old body. Simply bending over would send my back into spasms and putting my knees on the ground would cause me to shriek. Forget running or jumping. My blood pressure had begun to creep, and the largest size at the local Big and Tall store (7x) was getting too tight.

When Jared’s story went viral in December 2016, something he said resonated with me. He said that he wondered if this was going to be the year that he was going to have that heart attack. I have always been an optimistic person, and sometimes, in my optimism, I don’t even notice when I’m unhappy. But at my heaviest, I had begun to have panic attacks. I realized that I was afraid I was afraid of leaving behind my beautiful wife and four young children. I finally purchased the DDPYoga app and began my journey on January 23rd, 2017.

I began my workouts in a chair – what DDP calls a Chair Warrior – and I couldn’t even finish my first 20 minute chair workout without cramps. But I came back the next day. And the next day. In time, I got better, and I got stronger. After cutting cow dairy, the swelling and pain in my feet went away, and working out became more enjoyable.

Finding time to workout is challenging. I have a busy life. In addition to my hospice chaplaincy work, I’m a parish priest, run a non-profit, and have a full family life, so as much as I’d like to lift weights or play sports, DDPYoga is the best and easiest option for staying fit. I can do it anywhere at any time in any weather. As of the end of the 2017, have dropped 126 lbs and am now 334 lbs. I haven’t been under 360 lbs in over a decade. And I’m just getting started.

I waited three and a half years to get the DDPYoga app because I was afraid to fail. I don’t want anyone else to make the same mistake that I did. I lost three and a half years of my health. Three and a half years of running around with my kids. Because of fear. Own your life. Do it today. It won’t get any easier tomorrow or the next day or after the next big project is finished. It just has to be today.
